Tornado Warning!

This was captured on Memorial day evening and features a nice red barn and house and the properties small pond located just below. The bottom photo caught my eye a week or so ago and I stopped to see if I could try to capture the sea of yellow. The owner was very friendly and said sure so I asked if I could return to try a pond shot sometime and he said sure whenever, even if we are not home which I appreciated. That brings us to Monday night when possible storms were forecast so I decided why not head out here. I was thinking maybe lightning reflected in the pond or whatever possibilities might develop! I arrived with a dark sky behind the barn and the occasional rumble but really no lightning to speak of. I set my tripod as low as it goes at the edge of the pond with my camera and then added a big golf umbrella I velcro fast to the tripod. I then add a small bag with about 30-40 pounds of weights in it to the tripod and umbrella to keep it from taking off!

After I have my composition locked and focused, I go back to my truck for added safety and remotely operate the camera. It was looking more and more like a flop with the storm just languishing in the distance and the chance for a good shot becoming less with each passing minute. I was a couple minutes from throwing in the hat when I noticed a beam of light below the storm where it was starting to light up. Well the light got better and better till the point I shot this frame and just like that my phone lit up with an emergency Tornado Warning and I could see the rain coming in so I made a beeline to grab my camera before everything let loose. It got pretty windy with heavy rain for a few minutes but thankfully no Tornado developed. All in all I was very happy with the result of this evening of opportunities.

Almost Heaven,West Virginia

This past weekend a good friend suggested we head to West Virginia to catch some fall foliage and I am so glad we did.I normally like to head to New England in the fall but the forecast was for lackluster color there this year so heading south sounded like a great idea. We only had two days and our main destination was a place of natural beauty called Dolly Sods. On the way there I spotted this lovely red barn with fall foliage as a backdrop,so we stopped and I asked if I might be able to snap a few shots? The owner was very gracious and obliged my request and as I walked out the path to the barn I saw this old wagon sitting in the field and decided to take a shot. I think the composition is just right and the foliage was a perfect complement to the red barn. For those who don’t get the title, it is a line from an old John Denver song that I jokingly was singing on the trip. We had a great two days of shooting but man do they have steep hills in that state and when I was in my early twenties I drove truck and on one trip the truck blew up in West Virginia and we were stuck there for days and I remember feeling like we were in the most remote place on earth, which is not the case but some of the valleys make me feel that way. This photo was taken in what I would say was one of the more open valleys that we came across.

Vermont Stonewall

This is one of a few images I got while spending two days traversing Vermont on my way home from Lake Placid.Fall color was late this year,so I was coming through at least a week before any real color appeared. I spotted this place on a back road and asked to roam around the property,which the owner gladly obliged.The property had about 6 red barns on it plus this rustic rock wall. A classic Vermont scene
