Just a quick snapshot of a local farm done with my infrared converted camera. It shoots color infrared but I liked the monochrome version better.

I have been reading about infrared photography and find it so intriguing. I can’t afford to convert a camera but I thought about trying the Hoya R72 filter. Have you any experience with using just a filter?
Yes,I have that filter. Thats what I started with originally. Do some research on your particular camera and how it works with infrared. I used my filter with both a nikon d70 and d200 and it worked well with those two bodies,but I recently loaned the filter to a friend with a canon and his results were terrible. each camera sensor is different and my d700 also was terrible. I bought the 77mm filter for my lenses which was 150 bucks,and when using a filter,its so dark that you need a tripod for exposures in the 8second range in daylight. a converted camera can be handheld with regular exposure times. the conversion cost about 180 bucks,but then your camera only does infrared. great when you have an old body that you rarely use. hope that helps you.
Thanks so much for your advice. I work with a Canon and unfortunately don’t have a spare … But I’m glad I didn’t go ahead and buy the filter before asking. I guess my experiments will have to wait a bit. Thanks Donald!!
Sure. not sure if certain canon models work better than others with infrared. nikon has several cameras that are great and some that are bad.
Ooooooooooooh. This is spectacular. I used to do some infrared with my film camera but have not tried it with digital. I have no idea how to convert one of my old cameras to do infrared. I suppose I could read up on it. 🙂
I also did the film thing,but it was subject to problems with handling that i do not miss. Check out lifepixel for conversions.
