Rail Trail

This is a pair of shots looking up the old railroad line near my home.A rail trail is going to be built in the coming months and has been the source of much stress over the past year. For close to 5 years, some of which had me serving as a trail committee member,I was involved in trying to do the right thing for the residents who live along the trail. Two months before the project was set to begin, some moron comes up with the brilliant idea to fill this historic section in with dirt to save money. it is very scenic with rock outcroppings and such but a promised tunnel under a road was said to be too costly,so the idea to add fill actually became reality. It is estimated to take several thousand truck loads of dirt to fill in what was a beautiful corridor,so the lesson I learned is never trust elected officials to do as they promised.

  1. Why can’t they just put a cross walk at the road with lights like they did in Warwick Twp? That road has a 45mph speed limit. I think the road near you has a speed limit of only 25 or 35.

  2. Fill with dirt to save money–this makes absolutely no common sense. Leaving this beautiful landscape as nature intends costs nothing. MORON is right!

  3. Unfortunately, too many Council members have no interest in a rail trail and are opting for the cheapest way of doing it. The tunnel would have be safer, more scenic, less disruptive to traffic, and of course, it would have preserved the historical nature of the railroad. Very disappointing to see the area filled in.

  4. You are right. It is beautiful and would be cool in the summer. A lot of trail rides out here are in the sun and shade plus change of terrain is much appreciated.

  5. Hardest work is public involvement with government–and I thought voting was all we had to do! Sympathize with you.

From another side, the USA century long love affair with autos is wearing thin with a lot of folks–people who want a nice place to walk close to home–and that rail to trail conversion is a great looking walk.
