Simpler Times

The inside of one of Lancaster Counties numerous covered bridges and on the outside some colorful fall foliage around a small old building awaits anyone strolling through! This was shot on a tripod with one exposure capturing the dark interior and a second exposure capturing the bright exterior. An overcast day would possibly allow a single shot to capture the dynamic range of both inside and out but there usually is some part that just falls apart in deep shadows or bright highlights. As a side note, I actually got permission like 10 or 15 years ago to string Christmas lights up on the exterior roof edge, but that was when I was young and nimble. It drew a lot of people to see the lit bridge. I still have huge totes full of icicle lights I purchased to do that. Just another fond memory of my many endeavors to do something special with my photography. I should write a book detailing my adventures including a few times I almost paid the price for what I will call my momentary loss of common sense..

  1. This is remarkable. Just telling us how you composed the picture was impressive. I really like the story about the icicle lights on the bridge – just so very happy that you survived some of your most dangerous endeavors – for that I thank God!

    Blessings to you.

  2. Hi! LOVE the shot! Any chance you would reveal which covered bridge? And is the building a home..or originally a mill converted to a home? I trust you know about Donald Kautz’s new book “The Mills of Lancaster County”…sometimes mills and covered bridges go together … Thanks to other commenters about your doing the ENB calendar…do you have to be a bank customer to get one? Thanks again for sharing your work…I especially enjoy your backstories!

    • Thanks, it is Poole forge bridge and to be honest I do not know the history of that building. The whole property was an iron forge way back. You can even drive through it. If you go make sure you look at the wishing well at this building and the stone walls around the main house. A local stone mason did them and they are really impressive. If you are local I can give you a calendar. Also I am not familiar with this mill book.

      • Thanks for FAST reply…I’ve been to Poole Forge, but a good while ago…I actually think it’s in Donald Kautz’s book…he’s another great photographer with a website under his name…thanks for calendar offer! I live in Lititz..maybe we could connect at a Cafe (like Dosie Dough, my fav!)…I’ll buy you a coffee & pastry 🙂
