The painted lady butterfly has always been one of my favorites, but I do not see as many of them as I did years ago. This one was the only one I saw all day last week, and while it’s not my best shot,it’s the most recent. Anyone interested in doing this type of shot should do their best to get the head sharp. This shot is barely acceptable, as he was turning away from me while I was focusing. If the wings are sharp and not the head,forget it. Its like doing a portrait of a person and having their hair sharp and not their eyes. Little things like that make or break a shot.

Nice photo. We have times when so many of Painted ladies come by (like 50/minute). This month see maybe 2/day. Would like to get a better camera and wondered what camera and lense you use(though actually want a pocket type camera to carry with me.
thanks,i use a nikon and a macro lens for butterfly photos. there are some good decent point and shoots that do close up as well. good luck.
Hi Thank youUsed a Nikon and macro(school camera ) in photo class many years ago.My current little camera is conking out sometimes and goes through batteries quickly.Wish easier to shop for a camera as So many out there.

yes,there are a lot.
I assume the red and purple is unique to the States, as in UK neither colour features. It is stunning though, thanks.
not sure, i have seen a whole range from intense to washed out.
